Located in the Scheldt valley, the Abbaye de Vaucelles is one of the most prestigious monuments in the North of France.
Located 12 km from Cambrai and 24 km from Saint-Quentin, the Abbaye de Vaucelles is one of the most prestigious monuments in the North of France. This building dates from 1145. It is 80 meters long and 18.50 meters wide. It has 4 different rooms:
– The Monks’ room served as a common room or scriptorium, whose activity was one of the most traditional inside a monastery; – The auditorium or parlor built in 1155, where the cellarer father distributed the daily work to the various managers of construction sites and works in progress;
– The Chapter room, completed in 1175, is the jewel of the abbey and the largest Cistercian chapter room in Europe and the sacred passage at the call of the bell, the monks came to this passage to put on the white cowl for the choristers before to reach the choir of the church to sing the divine office there.
Restored since 1971, it now serves as a setting for many artistic events and can be visited all year round.
